LA KERMESSE AUX ETOILES 1951 (June 23 and 24, 1951, at the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris, France) was an annual ‘Fair of the Stars’, celebrating the liberation of Paris in 1944. This 5“ x 7“ booklet includes 44 signatures of international and French singers, actors, actresses etc. who attended the festivities. This booklet was signed by :
ERICH VON STROHEIM (1885 – 1957), famous writer/director/actor of/in many films from 1912 until 1955 : Foolish Wives (1922), Greed (1924), The Wedding March (1928), Queen Kelly (1928) etc. . Over the years he appeared in several fantasy/horror-related films : The great Gabbo (1929), The Crime of Dr. Crespi (1935), The Lady and the Monster (1944), The Mask of Diijon (1946), Alraune (1952). He is probably best known for his appearances in La Grande illusion (1937) and Sunset Boulevard (1950).
This booklet was also signed by Von Stroheim’s secretary and companion for many years, French actress DENISE VERNAC (1916 – 1984).
ROGER DELGADO (1918 – 1973) appeared in The Stranglers of Bombay (Hammer, 1959), The Terror of the Tongs (Hammer, 1961), The Mummy’s Shroud (Hammer, 1967) and is also known for his portrayal of ‘The Master’ in de famous British Dr. Who tv series (1971 – 1973). A Very scarce horror/fantasy-autograph !!!
MARTITA HUNT (1900 – 1969) appeared in many films and stage plays. She was David Peel’s mother, Baroness Meinster, in Hammer’s The Brides of Dracula (1962). She added to her signature : ‘Souvenir d’une anglaise’.
PAUL MEURISSE (1912 – 1979) French actor who appeared in Les Diaboliques / Diabolique (1955).
and by a large number of (mostly French) singers, actors and actresses (: Claude Farell, Micheline Cheirel, Rosy Varte, Gaby Basset etc.)
Some of the signatures are dedicated to ‘Rosine’ .
